- Festival programming — Rooted in an 1852 religious tradition (candles placed at windows on 8 December); Lyon adopted the first Plan Lumière in Europe in 1989 and, in 1999, the city reorganised the celebration into the present multi-day festival, programming and commissioning the works itself
- Works are commissioned or selected by open call; after the festival an audience-voted Trophée des Lumières is awarded to outstanding pieces
